shower gifts
Ok I will be attending my first wedding shower in about a month and with the shower invitation i received a few cards showing where the couple is registered.

My question is, do I bring a gift to the shower as well as to the wedding? or just to 1? would there be different registries for the shower and wedding?

thanks

Herbal Bouquet
Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone here has used Herbs in their bouquets, or boutonnieres? Which did you use, how did you choose which ones you used and what did your bouquet look like on the day? Did you use flowers as well as herbs?

Anyone have pictures of their bouquets/boutonnieres with herbs?

Tia!

So funny story about this cake.  Originally the florist was supposed to leave me small roses to put around the top of the cake topper.  But when I got there all that was left for me were those large ones you see in the photo.  The event coordinator who helped me place the cake handed them to me, gave me a "I dont know" look and said "good luck"  But this is what I ended up with.  I think it was the right choice to change the design rather than stick with the original one.

I particularly enjoyed delivering this cake because it was delivered to a state park where I got to drive all the roads you arent supposed to drive on.

And driving on things you arent supposed to drive on, makes me happy.

This was Maria's very first cake. And it was a doozy.

It was a super hot day and this cake had to be transported up to Napa. I made poor Maria sit in the back and hold a dowel I had shoved into the top so that it wouldnt tip over while driving. It was a very harrowing experience Im sure.

The hard part for me was having to carry that thing over about 50 feet of grass and down a little stone path without shaking it too much otherwise that cake was going to crack more than it already did.

Luckily we came prepared and Maria and I spent about 30 minutes placing hydrangeas and butterflies in strategic locations.

And yes, that is a real fondant ribbon you see on those slanted cakes between the tiers with the lattice work borders and leaf decor.

Post-wedding post
First, here are our photographer's pictures from the day. (The password is laura). http://continuumphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/5243955_YZ5TW#319962250_7Bw8r

Our wedding was small (38 guests + our photographers came to our wedding), and the size worked really well for us, since we felt close to everyone there and were able to talk to everyone. We had it in a restaurant--in their private party area. While I would have loved to have done something outside, I was scared about having to come up with a Plan B if anything went wrong.

The Good:

--Almost everything!
--Almost everyone danced at least a little--and some people danced a lot!
--There were no technical malfunctions (which I was a little scared about, since we had our ipod, and no real back-up plan).
--It was so great seeing everyone
--I met my wonderful nieces, or rather, they became my nieces! They are so sweet and so smart.
--I had a really good time myself; I had time to eat, talk to people, dance, and everything else.
--I was happy with all of our vendors.
--We actually did Hava Nagila, and I was so happy! (My husband's family is Jewish, and some of my family is.)
--The fish-eye take your own picture camera.
--People became friends with each other at our wedding!
--Our after-party was so much fun!
--When our photographer took us outside for pictures (during the cocktail hour), people on the street applauded and cheered us--especially when I shouted, "We just got married!"

The Eh (there was no bad, though):

--One person forgot about our wedding and only came to the after-party, but I almost feel more bad about her feeling bad about it.
--The person who had done my makeup trial wasn't scheduled to come in, even though I had an appointment with her. This was resolved easily enough (another person did my makeup, and it looked just as good as it had for the trial, only a teensy bit different), but it made me unexpectedly cry. And then, I didn't cry at the wedding. All in all, I guess this is a neutral point.
--Lots of people were caught up in traffic jams, so some of our timing was off; the ceremony started about 15 minutes late (but no one complained).
--My husband's sister forgot her reading, so we used our photographer's iphone to copy it from the net. (Crisis averted and all that.)
--The sushi snacks and to-do set up list were accidentally left out (oops!)
--I wish I had spent a little more time with some of my relatives, including my parents.
--My dad accidentally said my sister's name instead of my name during his toast (no biggie, really).
--I tried, but I couldn't sleep well at all(!) the night before (wonder why....)
--The officiant was a little awkward during times of our ceremony, but he was more helpful than anything else, really.

I feel like everyone has probably heard most of the advice I could give, but I will say that I was so glad that I brought flats to wear later during the reception. Also, I'm glad that we left on our honeymoon two days after our wedding.

Guest list and invitation help!
Well, we've set a date (June 28, 2009) and now we need to finalize the guest list. The ceremony venue can only have 35 people maximum. We haven't settled on a reception venue just yet.

The original plan was to not have my dad's side of the family there as I'm not close to any of them. It would be my mom's side of about 20-25, my dad and his wife and their kids, and then my FH's mom, dad, and brother. So a very small wedding with everyone invited to equal 34.

When I let my mom and dad know about the intended plan, they both got mad at me. "Your dad's side is family! They should be invited!" my mom said. "My family would understand about the limited number for the ceremony, but why can't they come to the reception?" asked my dad.

I want the people there that I consider family. Family to me is being close and caring about each other, and I just don't feel that way about his side. To me, they're like the popular girls in grade school that snubbed their noses at you because you weren't smart enough or cool enough. But at the same time, I feel like I should invite them. I mean, they are technically family.

I'd just like some more opinions... So what do you all think? Invite or no?

And if so, how do I invite them so they know they'd only be going to the reception? Should I make two different sets of invitations one for the ceremony/reception and then one for just the reception guests? What's the etiquette for this?

Cake
How much is everyone paying for cake? Our reception place does the catering, too, and if you don't use their baker, they charge $1.50 a slice plating fee. Their cake is $7 per person (our guest list is 115; hoping for 80-85, so that's almost $600 for the cake).

My mom thinks it's too much, but I think we won't find another baker cheap enough to justify the plating fee.

Thanks.

Combined parent dances - any song ideas?
Hi everyone! We are thinking about combining the father/daughter dance with the mother/son dance. Has anyone else done this? If so, what song did you/are you planning to use?

We are having a 5-piece swing/jazz band, so bonus points for anything that would sound good played by the band!

I hope all of the Americans have a wonderful 4th of July weekend! (and all of the non-Americans have a wonderful regular weekend) :-)
